MILWAUKEE, Wis (WAUK) — The City of Milwaukee is set to launch a major electric vehicle charging network, backed by a $15 million federal grant. The project, part of Milwaukee’s Climate and Equity Plan, aims to install 53 charging stations across the city by 2030.
The City of Milwaukee Environmental Collaboration Office (ECO) will oversee the initiative, which includes 45 Level 2 charging locations within Milwaukee, six in neighboring communities, and two DC fast-charging stations. The total project cost is estimated at $18.7 million, with $3.7 million coming from private sector funding.
The city plans to prioritize installations at public library locations to make them accessible. See a full list of locations here. The focus is on areas lacking existing infrastructure and low-to-moderate income communities. At least 40% of the sites will be in disadvantaged neighborhoods.
The project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, create local jobs, and increase consumer choice. Electric vehicle owners will pay to use the charging stations, which will be built and operated by a private-sector partner to be selected in 2025.
