Mayor Takes Strong Stand on Milwaukee’s Role in Immigration

He’s making it clear. Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson is taking a strong stand when he says the city’s role in immigration does not include engaging with federal authorities like ICE. And he adds that local law enforcement is not tasked with policing immigration status. Johnson joins Earl Ingram, host of The Earl Ingram Show, and opens up about the approach to immigration and the rights of undocumented individuals. 

“It is important to ensure all residents, regardless of their status, feel safe and supported when accessing city services, especially in critical situations like medical emergencies or reporting crimes,” Johnson says.

He also acknowledges the contribution of immigrants to the local economy and points at their work in agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. Johnson tells Ingram, despite the political rhetoric surrounding immigration, many are hardworking individuals.

“They are contributing significantly to our community,” Johnson explains. “Disrupting their lives would harm the city’s economy and the well-being of its residents.”

The conversation turns to the consequences of federal policies under the Trump administration. The mayor is concerned local resources and services could be impacted. And he says funding cuts in areas like community development, health services, and infrastructure would devastate Milwaukee. This includes the removal of lead service lines across the city. Johnson highlights the need for federal policies that prioritize affordable living and investment in communities, rather than those causing additional harm. 

“There is a delicate balance between local governance and federal influence,” Johnson says. “And there’s the importance of making decisions that prioritize the well-being of all residents.”

Johnson calls his stance a commitment to ensuring Milwaukee remains a welcoming and supportive city for all, especially those who contribute to its growth and success.
