MADISON, Wis. (WMDX) – For years, Dane County dispatchers have said they need a new headquarters. Now, work is finally starting.

They’ve outgrown the old Dane County 911 Center in downtown Madison. Former Dane County Executive Joe Parisi put $30 million in his final county budget for the new center, after years of advocacy from leaders.

Leaders broke ground earlier this week on the site of the new building. The new Dane County Public Safety Communications Facility will be on Madison’s east side.

Right now, dispatchers have about 10,000 square feet. The new center will be more than triple that size.

They’ll have upgraded technology, and geothermal heat and air conditioning.

About 100 people work for Dane County Communications, and they partner with 90 local agencies.

The new building is expected to be finished next year.
