Landon Jones doesn’t just design art. He makes moments. And a recent creative leap landed his work in a commercial competition. The winning video will be played during the Super Bowl in February. The goofy ads are often one of the things people look forward to as a part of the big game and talk about long after it.

But first, back to Jones.

LISTEN to Teri Barr’s story about Jones here:

He’s known around Northeast Wisconsin for his work as a content creator using his photography and video skills. His Green Bay-based company, Respect (spelled RSPKT), is making a name for itself, too. And while you may think his journey in the creative world seems straightforward, there’s an interesting twist behind it.

Jones went to college at UW-Milwaukee. His plan? He wanted to study healthcare administration. Jones instead started to find himself increasingly drawn to the world of design and digital creation. He began dabbling in Photoshop and other creative apps, eventually realizing his true passion – the arts. So Jones dropped out to pursue his newfound calling. And at the beginning, primarily worked with artists in the music industry to hone his craft.

But jump forward and a recent video project landed in an exciting place. Jones made a commercial for Doritos as part of a Super Bowl contest. He titled it ‘That’s Bold’ with the process behind it being spurred by a moment of snacking on some of the chips.

“What if just holding a Dorito causes your hand to grow bigger? And then eating a Dorito makes your head grow bigger,” Jones explains. “I executed a budget-friendly yet professional production using these fun concepts.”

And the concepts worked. His video moved beyond the thousands of initial entries to the semi-finalists round of 25. However we just learned, he did not make the cut to the top three. Jones remains proud of his work and is energized by the experience.

Watch “That’s Bold” here:

Did you know?

  • 59 different commercials aired during the Super Bowl in 2024
  • 30-second ads cost $7 million to run during the big game in 2024
  • Two 90-second ads are tied for the most expensive Super Bowl commercials ever: Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant each cost $16.8 million to run
  • Budweiser remains on top as the company to purchase the most Super Bowl ads in total

(*All statistics according to Ad Age Research)

“I want to collaborate with more national brands, global brands,” Jones says. “And I want to offer aspiring creatives in Northeast Wisconsin a platform to showcase their talents.”

A strong foundation and ever-growing portfolio may place Landon Jones in the category of “people to watch.” His artistic journey, grounded in passion and determination, is really just beginning. And the world could soon see even more of his bold ideas – being created in the Green Bay area.

“I love my city,” he says. “I grew up here, born and raised. I wanna make something happen here.”

You can watch and vote on your favorite of the top three Doritos videos here. By the way, the favorite commercial will air during the big game which is pretty cool. But the winner also earns $1,000,000.

Jones also recently joined the Maino and the Mayor show to talk about his love of content creation, and the decision to enter the commercial contest.
