RACINE, Wis. (WRJN) – A giraffe at the Racine Zoo has died following a fall on Thursday afternoon. Jabari, a Masai giraffe who had been at the zoo since October 2017, fell in his holding area and could not get back on his feet, zoo officials reported.
The incident occurred while a second giraffe was preparing for a scheduled procedure. It’s reported that Jabari was startled and fell within his enclosure, potentially injuring his neck. Members of the Racine and Milwaukee Fire Departments worked together to try and lift Jabari using a sling system.
Despite their efforts, Jabari was pronounced dead around 9 p.m. The zoo referred to him as one of its “dearest residents,” highlighting his popularity among visitors during giraffe feedings and educational programs. Recently, he had welcomed a new companion named Shaq, with whom he formed a bond.
In response to the loss, the Racine Zoo will be closed to the public on Friday, January 17, allowing staff time to mourn and care for other animals. This marks the second giraffe death at the zoo in two months; Mac, another giraffe, passed away in November at age 19.
