What is a REAL ID?

A Wisconsin REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or ID card has a star in the upper right corner. Standard non-compliant cards are marked “NOT FOR FEDERAL PURPOSES.”

When You Need a REAL ID

Starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID-compliant form of identification (or alternative like a passport) to:

• Board domestic flights
• Enter federal buildings
• Enter nuclear power plants

How to Get a REAL ID in Wisconsin

Visit a DMV Service Center

You’ll need to visit in person with your documents.

Required Documents

You must provide documents from these categories:

1. Proof of U.S. Citizenship or Legal Status (one document):
   • U.S. Birth Certificate
   • Valid U.S. Passport
   • Certificate of Naturalization
   • Certificate of Citizenship
2. Proof of Identity (one document):
   • Valid U.S. Passport
   • Social Security Card
   • Wisconsin Driver’s License/ID (current)
3. Proof of Wisconsin Residency (two documents):
   • Utility bill (water, electric, gas, etc.)
   • Bank statement
   • Mortgage documents
   • Current, valid homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy
   • Pay stub or earnings statement
   • Tax statements
4. Proof of Social Security Number (one document):
   • Social Security Card
   • W-2 form
   • Pay stub with full SSN
5. Proof of Name Change (if applicable):
   • Marriage certificate
   • Divorce decree
   • Court order

Cost

The cost for a REAL ID is the same as a standard ID when you get it at your regular renewal time. If you get it before your renewal, there’s a duplicate card fee.
