One of my favorite movies from the ’80s: The Breakfast Club
They just don’t make movies like that anymore….literally. According to the cast, they probably won’t make them like that anymore either.
Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Anthony Michael Hall sat down together for the first time in 40 years at the Chicago Comic over the weekend and were asked: Could this same movie be made in 2025?
Emilio Estevez took that question: “Movies today are concept-driven, they’re not character-driven, and the beauty of John [Hughes] is that he focused on characters first. And when you think about trying to pitch this movie today — it’s about five kids sitting in a library all day in detention — the studio executives would march you right out the door and say where are the monsters? Where’s the car chases? Where are the big effects?”
They also shared some behind-the-scenes casting that could have been different than what we saw in the movie:
“From my understanding, John Cusack was going to play Bender and Joan Cusack was going to play Allison. I don’t know who was going to play the other parts,” Molly Ringwald shared. She said she took a look at the script for the Allison character but she wanted to play Claire instead because that character was less like her.

Homemade versions are delicious but there’s nothing wrong with grabbing a box from the frozen food aisle to try. You can boil these mashed potato dumplings and garnish as you wish…. Or, try my […]

Movie Review: The Exorcism of Emily Rose
The fact that I waited 20 years to watch this movie is a crying shame! The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005) combines two of my favorite kinds of movies: Courtroom Dramas and Scary Movies (especially the demonic possession kind). For fans of the show Ozark, you’ll recognize Laura Linney. She plays the defense attorney that […]

Movie Review: Trap
It pains me to say this about an M. Night Shyamalan movie, but I found one I didn’t like. We’ve joked on the show that I should be the captain of the “Give M. Night Movies A Try” fan club because the critics are usually so harsh and while I haven’t seen all of his […]

In The Kitchen with Laura McKenna: Orange Vinaigrette Recipe
I’ve been on an Oil & Vinegar dressing kick lately but I also like a zingy Raspberry Vinaigrette every now and again. I had a few extra oranges on hand and thought- How about an Orange Vinaigrette? That might be tasty! So I messed around and came up with this perfect ratio of a sweet […]
